I get a lot of calls about building affiliate websites. Many of these would be marketers have already started on the wrong path in my opinion.
Because most of the time, the plan they have, starts with a name….
A domain name.
So let’s talk about domains today, because it is one of the first steps in building an affiliate website.
What I see often is that affiliates register good sounding, BRANDABLE domains. Rather than considering a domain that might help them market and sell specific products or services. For example, let’s say that you want to build an affiliate website that promotes underwear for women. Would it be better to build that affiliate website on underwearforwomen.com or a brandable domain like chuckssupersecrets.com???
In my opinion and experience, the keyword domain wins, hands down. Not that you’re going to come up number one in Google for the term “underwear for women” without any additional work, but this domain is going to help you get there. Most times much faster than a branded domain.
Sure, it’s cool to have my website with my name. In this case, Chuck’s Super Secrets. But I’m all about building websites to make money. So if I can get it, I’m going to stick with the keyword oriented domains. Bypassing the need to spend a jillion dollars branding my site and getting the word out there.
Nope, it’s much easier to stick with what I know works. Find a good keyword domain for your affiliate site. Stay targeted. Promote products and services on that site that are confined to that niche.
If you want to promote another niche, build another targeted site.
